Ask this question before you go on a walk with your reactive dog
Why are we going on this walk?
To meet their needs so they can sleep peacefully while you work?
Or are you going out to deliberately work on skills?
Why does this question matter?
Because if I’m going out to deliberately work on skills, I’m going to pick an environment with the right amount of distractions for what I’m currently working on. If I’m going out to meet their needs, I’m probably heading somewhere quiet where they can sniff, move freely and enjoy hanging out together.
This balance is important
Working through reactivity is hard and giving your dog time to be a dog away from triggers is an important part of your training plan, but if we never get close enough to practise our skills, our training won't progress.
