Need ideas to entertain your dog during the heatwave? If you've got a young dog that just won't settle or a high energy dog that struggles without a walk, here's how to keep them entertained during hot weather and help them stay calm.
Keeping exercise safe
☀️Don’t forget to check the humidity and not just the temperature
☀️Stay in the shade and avoid pavement
☀️Focus on calm sniffing and exploring. Minimise running
☀️Make sure water is always available
☀️If you don’t need to take your dog out, don’t. If you do, stick to the coolest times of day
💦If your dog is a water lover, get the paddling pool out!
If they need encouragement to get themselves soggy, try some ‘treat bobbing’
🧠Use their brains. There are heaps of low energy tricks and skills you can teach them. Practising stays and waits is a great brain work out.
👃Get them sniffing! Short bursts of searching for treats, toys, or trained odors will use excess energy without too much exertion.
🧊Freeze meals and treats in enrichment toys to help them cool down and entertain themselves
💤Make sure they rest. They don’t need to be on the go all day. Sleep is super important and if they want to just chill out, let them!
