Reasons your dog can't walk nicely on a lead today
Have you noticed a change in your dogs behaviour over the past few days? Maybe they're a little more barky, less settled or just not themselves? It's likely last weeks heat is playing a role!
It can be super frustrating when your dog is pulling on lead and it's easy to jump straight to 'this training isn't working, I need another method.' However, when we find dogs can walk beautifully on lead one day and are pulling like a steam train the next, it's usually not a training issue. Often the cause comes down to one of these three things...
There is too much going on in the environment
When we’re working on training we need to introduce to distractions gradually. If they’re bouncing between sniffs and pulling to every distraction you likely need a quieter training environment
Something has changed in their body
It could be hormones, they might still be growing or they could be uncomfortable from stomach pain, or discomfort from a slip trip or fall. Maybe they’re lacking sleep.
They're Trigger Stacked
Trigger stacking happens when dogs experience lots of stressful events, big or small, one after the other without time to decompress inbetween. When these events build they’re more likely to have big reactions and can struggle to focus
Dogs are never doing things to upset you or just because, there's always something causing their behaviour.
